A Motorcycle Ride Can Be Like Life
Many things we do everyday can relate to life in general — some good things and some less than good.
This blog post relates to a beautiful fall Saturday and some lessons learned as well as being reminded of lessons learned long ago.
This past Friday a good friend and motorcycle riding partner called me to see if Dickie and I were up to riding on Saturday. There was a rally and bike show in Hickman County called the Grinders Switch Motorcycle Rally. Now keep in mind, I am almost always ready to ride my Harley so I was rareing to go.
What I was reminded of on Saturday:
Lesson #1. It is great to have good friends. Paul and his lovely wife, Stacy, came rolling up to our house on their Harleys. Paul suggested we not ride the direct route to Grinders Switch but rather take a more scenic route.
Lesson #2. Take time to enjoy the beautiful scenery God has given us. We left the Wilson abode and proceeded down The Natchez Trace Parkway to Leipers Fork exit then drove through Fly, TN towards Columbia branching off on Hwy 247 over to Hwy 50. Lots of beautiful farmland.
Lesson #3. Never ride a 2 wheeler after taking pain meds. As we proceeded along this picturesque route I started feeling a little groggy, probably due to the pain pills I had taken earlier. We continued on our journey, however, thinking I would feel better with some food and caffeine in me.
Lesson #4. Always check the price before you are committed to buying. We finally arrived at the bikers rally and were told it was $20 each to get in. Typically a $20.00 ticket would not be to bad but his show was not worth $40.00 a couple but it was supposed to go to a good cause.
Lesson #5. Giving to those less fortunate than us always makes us feel good.
We hung out at the show for maybe an hour, then decided to head for home. This time we took the most direct route. Even though I had eaten a hamburger, a couple of fries and part of a coke followed by a portion of funnel cake, I felt I was getting even more tired, but what the heck only 25 miles to home and a straight shot at that. Now keep in mind that I have driven my bike to and from Centerville many times in the past but this seemed like the longest trip ever.
As I drove down my driveway, I hit the garage door opener. I must have gotten excited about being home and seeing the door going up because I did something no rider should ever do. I stopped my bike with the fork turned to the left instead of straight on. Guess what! The 850 lb. beautiful black Harley went down like a ton of lead with Dickie and me on it. Thank God neither the Harley nor Dickie and I were injured. Lesson #6. Always stay straight and its harder to fall—–
Well these are my lessons learned on a beautiful Harley on a beautiful God given day with my lovely wife, Dickie.
As I anxiously await each day, I am excited as I try to put these lessons into action.
Thanks for journeying with me on our latest blog.
By the way, if you know someone who is suffering from cancer, I give away a little book “Healed of Cancer” by Dodie Osteen. This is an excellent read which provides hope and inspiration. Just let me know either by phone # 615-485-0999 or email Hal@Halwilson.net and I will be glad to send you one free of charge.
One final note —Hal’s Health. I was at St.Thomas Hospital on Tuesday visiting my doctor and getting my infusion of happy juice. At this time the cancer is still stable. YEA GOD! I still have back pain due to the tumors on my spine and my arm hurts due to tendonitis but today both feel better.
As I close, I ask that you keep in your prayers on a daily basis all those less fortunate than we and especially our armed forces around the world.
May God bless each of you - Hal
